Anyone who has been vaping for a decent amount of time may have experienced the slightly unnerving “ Vapers Tongue ”. When your tongue can’t tell the flavor of the e-juice this is vapers tongue. Luckily enough the sensation is only temporary.
Vapers tongue happens sometimes with regular vaping, making the vaper feel like their tongue is coated with something and preventing them from being able to identify the flavors. This, however, won’t affect the nicotine being absorbed by the human body. When you lose the ability to taste, it may put you off vaping. What is the point if you can’t taste the flavour right? Wrong! This unusual event can be cured in a few different ways but before we look at the cures, we should probably look at the causes and what to do to avoid it.
VAPERS TONGUE CAN BE CAUSED BY:
DEHYDRATION:
Everyone has taste buds and the number each person has depends entirely from person to person. Most people have between 2000 and 8000 but some people may have more than 10,000 which would make them very sensitive to different flavours. Taste buds also have a life cycle which normally lasts in the region of 2 weeks. After this period the taste buds regenerate and that’s why we continue to be able to taste. Taste buds need saliva to be able to do their job. Unfortunately, vaping can cause your tongue to get tired which can then cause your mouth to become dry. Without enough saliva to keep your mouth moist we can lose our taste temporarily. It’s a catch 22 situation so keep yourself hydrated and drink plenty of fluids.
YOUR NOSE:
Your nose and mouth work together to distinguish between tastes and flavours and your ability to smell accounts for almost 70% of our taste. As a result, some of the more subtle flavours out there might not be recognised if your nose isn’t playing ball. If we’re exposed to the same smell for a substantial amount of time, we tend not to be able to recognise it after a while. It’s fair to say that if this is the case, and remember our smell is important for tasting, then it’s no wonder some people get vapers tongue.
SMOKING:
If you’re reading this, you’re either a vaper or a smoker thinking about vaping. Maybe you’re both! A smoker and a vaper. It’s no secret that smoking can affect your ability to taste and smell correctly. The best solution to this is to quit smoking and given a little time your senses will fully return. Easier said than done, I know!
HOW TO AVOID VAPERS TONGUE
We have established that the main causes of vaper’s tongue are dehydration, your ability to smell and smoking. Now, what are the solutions?
DRINK MORE:
Water has been around since the start of time and since 70% of our bodies are made up of water, it’s no surprise that this readily available liquid is extremely good for us. The more you vape, the more you drink! This, however, does not mean you drink as much caffeine or alcohol as you want. These drinks are diuretic which essentially means they make you want to pee. This dehydrates the body, which can lead to dry mouth.
STOP SMOKING:
For the reasons already mentioned, as well as for your overall health, quitting is a great way of stopping vapers tongue. Tobacco is hugely detrimental to your oral health and it’s no wonder it affects your ability to taste flavours.
Oral Health
Whilst we’re in the subject of oral health, it’s always helpful to maintain your routine when it comes to cleaning your teeth. This should always include cleaning your tongue. As you’ll notice when cleaning, by the end of the day your tongue will have a coating on it which is a result of all the food and drink you’ve consumed during the day. Scrub this away to give your taste buds a fighting chance to experience all those fantastic vaping flavours.
4 TIPS TO KILL OFF VAPERS TONGUE
CHANGE YOUR E-JUICE:
I like to mix up my juice as often as possible and this will also help you to avoid vapers tongue. If you like a certain taste, go over to the other side of the spectrum and try something completely different to kick start your taste buds again. If you’re not keen on changing it up too much try flavours containing mint as they can help your taste buds come alive again.
FLAVOUR BOMB:
Find something that’s bitter and try and stimulate your taste buds. You can do this with whatever you enjoy, but the best food out there for this method is either a lemon or a lime. You can also do the same for your nose. Coffee is a common suggestion for you to rest your nose.
TAKE A BREAK:
Perhaps the simplest solution to resolve vaper’s tongue, is to just take a long break from vaping. This is easier said than done for some people and the length of the break will vary depending on the individual.
UNFLAVOURED JUICES:
Unflavoured juices…. What’s the point, right? Well these cheap little beauties will give your taste buds a much-needed rest and get your tongue in the route to recovery in no time.
